Frank Lloyd Wright was truly one of the first American architects to try and develop a truly American architecture. His designs are internationally famous. My wife and I have seen many of them in our travels so far, and I'm an interpreter (docent) at the Robie House on the South Side of Chicago.

This particular plant was hanging down from the front porch planter.

Almost all of the lighting fixtures in the house followed a theme, based on symbolism derived from Wright's family lineage going back to Wales. One of his family's symbols was a cross, in a circle, inside a square. If you look carefully at this fixture, you will see a cross in the base, with the circle of the light bulb, inside the main square of the base.

The original gates disappeared in the 1920's with no clear history of why or where they ended up.

A generous donor several years back paid to have them reproduced. The metalwork echoes the designs in the caming of the stained-glass windows, and also echoes angles found within the house. The main diamond, for example, matches the pitch of the roof.

Currently has a fiberglass sheet over it, originally had rice paper. The design is echoed throughout the house in the other ceiling grilles/laylights.

Literally. The Robie House, Frank Lloyd Wright's 1910 Prairie masterpiece in Chicago, had a central vacuum system installed throughout the three floors. This particular inlet is one of the few completely intact.

Wright and his apprentices gathered up loose stones from the desert surrounding the compound, filled up the forms with them, and then poured concrete over them, forcing it in between the loose rocks. The result was a strong composite wall that definitely blended in with the surroundings because it was made from the surroundings.
