He was also a longtime friend of Elvis Presley's, having met him when they were both in 8th grade. He remained one of Elvis' true best friends through the rest of his life, and Elvis even stood up as his best man at his wedding.

We had a common friend in the late Jimi Jamison, so I introduced myself to GK at the Sirius satellite studio for Elvis Radio located at the Graceland visitors' center and we shared some stories about our friend. He then agreed to pose for a photo with his co-host, Big Jim McKay.

In 1948, he cleared out the basement, looking for new ideas. Discovered the unused coal chute which would provide access for an exhaust hood. So, he installed a smoker and went into the BBQ business. It's dark, kitschy, and fun. Great food as well.

The current building, erected in 1925, replaced the original wooden structure. The decor has remained pretty much unchaged since the 50's. The food is good, the atmosphere is a complete throwback to the classic diners, with the exception that this is genuine, not some current retro-recreation.

The Arcade has survived through boom and bust, through the changes in Memphis after Dr. King's assassination, through the mass exodus of a lot of downtown's businesses. It was also one of Elvis' favorite places to eat, usually in the last diner on the left by the windows.
