Despite letting milkweed plants grow in our courtyard for years, this is the first year we've actually seen a Monarch take interest. I saw three caterpillars - unfortunately I also found a couple of dead ones. This mama goose is nesting along the shore of the lake that's on hospital property. I used a long lens so I didn't upset her, which would have upset her husband, who would have attacked me. Bowie started showing up in our yard this past Fall. He was obviously hungry, so we started to put food out for him. He kept coming back, and we checked around - nobody said they were missing a cat. We finally brought him in, got him checked out, and now he's decided that I'm his human. Yesterday morning I put out a full bowl of sunflower seeds mixed with some hamster food. Within an hour, it was down to this. I always wondered how the little guy could eat so much... then I noticed that he was just stuffing his cheeks until they were the size of his head, and then he'd run off and stash it. Based on how much food we've put out, there's probably 32 pounds of chipmunk food socked away for the winter. We've tried to explain to him that we'll keep feeding him even when it's winter... I was in the yard taking photos of Kermit, when I saw him poke his head out, looking annoyed that I was interrupting breakfast. I wasn't going to give in, so I stayed there. Kermit's definitely growing, but based on everything I've read, he's growing much slower than the average bullfrog. Maybe he'll just stay small? On our way back from Memphis, we stopped at a rest stop to break out the food and have lunch. There were several squirrels around who were definitely not shy - this one had been up in a tree eating and headed back down when he saw we had crackers.
