The core building, built of brick covered with a plaster mixture called "staff", was the Palace of Fine Arts for the World's Columbian Exhibition of 1893. Built in the Beaux Arts style, it borrows liberally from ancient Greek and Roman.

It was completely renovated in the late 1920's with a limestone replica of the original staff and wood surface, and opened as the science and industrial museum in 1933.

The North end of it at one time was actually the ticket office for the South end of an interurban railroad that ran through Valpo and up towards Lake Michigan.

The previous owners, a jewelry store, covered it all up with structural styrofoam in the late 90's. They moved to a new location late last year, and a man bought the old building with the intent to restore it to its vintage charm.

I missed photographing the sign when it had been exposed for a short time in the 90's, and then they glued styrofoam over everything. I made sure I got one this time, although it's not as clean since it's got adhesive on it and in places the foam removal peeled paint off.

Makes for some fairly eerie sightseeing. And, partly because of age and partly because of the climate, a lot of the plaster and brickwork is crumbling.
