Designed by Raymond Loewy's design team, it was only produced from 1962 to 1963. The name, design and tooling was sold to two former Studebaker dealers, who produced it under Avanti Motors for a number of years.

Goodbye To An Old Friend

I bought this 2001 Subaru Impreza 2.5RS brand-new in December of 2000. She was my very first brand-new car. I ordered her built the way I wanted, with just the features I wanted, and nothing else. Got the strut-tower brace to stiffen up the front end, and the short-throw shifter to make gearchanges more precise.

Named her Daphne (long story, but naming cars is a tradition in our family). 13 years and 194,000 miles later, she's lived a happy and appreciated life with Sheri and me.

She is the only car I've ever had that I really felt completely comfortable in. The designers just nailed it with this one - she felt like an extension of me when I drove. I knew exactly how she'd respond to a given situation, and the all-wheel-drive and low center of gravity makes her stable as a rock. And I love the looks - like a little blue bulldog. I've lost track over the years of all the compliments I've gotten on both the looks and the color.

But, she's finally starting to show her age, and I'm hoping our situation will allow me to get a new WRX in the coming year. Meanwhile, a friend who's also a Subaru enthusiast has been after me for a year to sell her to him - he's always wanted this particular model, and he knows I've taken care of her. So, on Thursday, I sign over the title and say goodbye to a loyal and trusted friend.

I only wish the sky wasn't so gray and that there wasn't a light snow flurry on the only day I have to take the final photos...but maybe that's appropriate.

This is the road-worn emblem on the nose of my 2001 Impreza 2.5RS, about to go to another good home.

This is the nose of my 2001 Impreza 2.5RS. You can see the eagle-shaped "eyes" and the nose and mouth. This is by far the best-looking Impreza design in Subaru history, and it really saddens me to see my favorite car turned into just another generic-looking sedan. I guess I should think of it as more of a stealth thing - as long as the WRX still has the peformance and handling, the fact that it now looks like any old soccer-mom Nissan means that I'm not going to draw as much attention on the road...

One of the cars is a 1978 Jaguar XJ-S. The XJ-S is one of my all-time favorite Jags. Sleek, fast, has a silky-smooth V12 under the hood. Always wanted one. At just a bit over $5000, this one is within reach, but I also am fully aware of some body rust and the fact that maintenance on a 70's-era Jag, especially one with a V12 and inboard brake discs, is a daunting expense if you don't have buckets of spare cash.

Aside from the Jag, the first thing that really caught my attention about the new used-car lot was the fact that there's a Rolls-Royce parked there. I had to get a closeup of the "Spirit of Ecstasy" (the official name for the winged lady hood ornament), the marque badge, and a hint of the iconic shape of a Rolls radiator.
