Crerar Plaque I

At the end of a dark, subterranean hallway that functions as an access tunnel between buildings, there are two ornate bronze plaques. Made no sense to me why they would be down there were very few people would ever see them. And then I did some research. The John Crerar Library started out in 1894 downtown in the Marshall Field building, then moved several times until finally being merged with the University of Chicago's libraries in 1981. In 1984, it moved into a new purpose-built building. These plaques have moved with the library over the years. For whatever reason, there was no place for them in the new building, so they put them in the basement.
