Every year, the Collings Foundation brings an assortment of old warbirds, usually including their B-17 and B-24, to the Porter County airport because the founder, Bob Collings, is a Valpo High School alum. I went out this year with the intent to ignore the planes for the most part, and to focus on the veterans who were the real story. James was a radioman on board a B-17 bomber. He was there with his son, overlooking the B-17 hanging in the museum and telling him about the different parts of the plane, and how his plane differed from this one.
