Lock 11 Bypass Channel Entrance

Bypasss channels were put in on the upstream side of a lock. When the upstream gates were closed, the water would back up and, if not given an outlet, would either flow over the gates or overflow the banks of the canal. The locktender would open the bypass gates when the water got to a certain level and the excess water would flow around the lock and re-enter the channel downstream. Olympus E-1, Zuiko 14-54mm
