The Bridge On the Pond, Why?
The former 135th Street Bridge over the Sanitary and Ship Canal in Romeville, IL is the only remaining highway swing bridge left in the country. It has a very unique design - the long lobe crossed the canal, while the short lobe acted as a counterbalance.
Built in 1899, it was finally closed in 1990 due to age and failing components of the drive train. Since it's a historic structure, and the only one of its kind left, the decision was made to relocate it to the Centennial Trail just West of where it had been, and it crosses over a marsh.
It's now part of a protected state park.
