In The Doghouse
The little shed nestled in the bridge beams is the control doghouse. The bridge operator would sit inside the shed and watch for ships coming down the Sanitary and Ship Canal. He would then throw the controls that would run the electric motors connected to a large ring gear, and that would swing the bridge out of the way. When the ship passed, the bridge would pivot back into place and cars could continue on.
