Page 3 of 5 Portable Flashes with Umbrellas Whenever possible, I use line-powered monolights with umbrellas. These provide greater power and will light the umbrella surface with a wide, even pattern with only a minimum of central hot-spotting. However, for portable applications, or when line-powering of the flashes is neither practical or safe, using small battery-powered flashes is desired.

The problem with this is the limited spread of the flash itself. Unless you place an Omnibounce or UltraBounce on the flash, the benefit of the umbrella is reduced. It doesn't matter how large the umbrella is, if the flash is illuminating just a portion then you lose the wraparound nature of the light. The FlashBender offers flexiblity in this, by attaching the FlashBender and firing the flash into it first which is then directed at the umbrella we are able to get the entire umbrella lit from the flash.
The FlashBender will shape not only in the concave position, but the convex position. If your flash is not wide enough to cover your wide-angle lenses, just adjust the FlashBender to an inverted-V shape which casts the light outward.
